Product & technology
Vauni fireplaces are fueled by bioethanol, a renewable fuel that, when used according to the instructions, produces a clean combustion without smoke, soot, or ash. During combustion, carbon dioxide and water vapor are formed, within applicable guideline levels.
Because the fireplaces are flue-free, the heat remains in the room instead of being lost through a chimney, contributing to an efficient and immediate heat experience.
No. Vauni fireplaces are designed to be flue-free and therefore do not require a chimney when operated in accordance with the instructions.
When operated in accordance with the instructions, the fireplace does not produce smoke or soot. Combustion results in carbon dioxide and water vapor, and differs from traditional wood or gas combustion.
Placement & installation
Vauni’s flue-free fireplaces can be installed in a wide range of environments, such as apartments, houses, holiday homes, or public spaces, provided they are used in accordance with the instructions. The recommended minimum room size is approximately 13–20 m², depending on the model.
The fireplace is primarily intended for indoor use, but it can also be used outdoors if placed in a sheltered location protected from weather and wind. When used outdoors, the fireplace should be brought indoors and stored inside during longer periods of non-use or during winter.
Freestanding models require no installation. Wall-mounted models are installed using the supplied wall bracket and must be secured with fixings appropriate for the wall type.
Fuel & usage
For best combustion performance, the fuel should be at room temperature. Carefully pour the bioethanol into the burner opening until it no longer drains through the mesh at the bottom. The correct level is reached when the fuel sits just above the mesh, indicating that the burner is full.
Depending on the model, the burner capacity is approximately 1.8–3.0 litres. Never refill the burner while it is hot; wait at least 20 minutes after extinguishing before refilling. Always wipe up any spilled fuel on the burner and surrounding surfaces before lighting.
The fireplace is lit using a long-reach lighter. The flame is adjusted with the supplied control tool, which is also used to extinguish the fire by closing the burner in accordance with the instructions.
The fireplace is fueled by denatured bioethanol. For the best experience, we recommend Vauni Ecoflame Premium, which is specifically formulated for use in our fireplaces.
No. The fireplace is intended for decorative and comfort heating only and is not designed for cooking. Using the fireplace for cooking is considered improper use and may damage the product and affect the warranty.
In Sweden, Vauni Ecoflame Premium is available through Vauni’s online store. It is formulated for use in bioethanol fireplaces and provides a stable flame and consistent performance when used according to the instructions.
For customers outside Sweden, we recommend using a high-quality bioethanol suitable for indoor fireplaces. If you need guidance on appropriate options available in your local market, please contact us and we will be happy to assist.
Vauni Ecoflame Premium is developed to work well with our bioethanol burners. The fuel is formulated to provide a stable flame and even combustion when used according to the instructions, with a focus on a pleasant and consistent fireplace experience.
A fireplace fuel essentially consists of three components: ethanol, water, and denaturing agents. Differences between fuels depend on how these components are combined and the quality of the materials used.
The choice of water is particularly important. Tap water, distilled water, and demineralised water all have different properties, which affect how the fuel behaves during combustion. Together with the quality of the ethanol, this determines how much denaturing agent needs to be added.
By combining high-quality ethanol with carefully selected water, the level of denaturing can be kept low. Denaturing agents are often a contributing factor to odour during combustion, especially in more general-purpose fuels developed for broad use.
Ecoflame Premium is developed according to Vauni’s own specifications and adapted for use in our burners. The result is a fuel that provides a stable flame and controlled combustion, with low odour impact when used correctly and without unnecessarily stressing the burner over time.
Fuel storage limits depend on local fire safety regulations and may vary by country and region.
In Sweden, it is generally permitted to store up to approximately 10 litres of flammable liquid indoors in apartments, and up to approximately 25 litres on a balcony. In houses, up to approximately 10 litres may be stored indoors, with a total maximum of around 100 litres when including storage in garages or associated outbuildings.
Outside Sweden, storage limits may differ. Always check with your local fire authority or relevant regulatory body to ensure compliance with applicable rules.
Heat, consumption & operating costs
Our fireplaces produce approximately 2.4–3 kW of heat output at maximum effect, depending on the model. This makes them well suited for ambient heating and as a complementary heat source in residential settings.
However, the kW rating does not tell the whole story of how the heat is experienced in the room. Vauni fireplaces are designed with high efficiency, converting the fuel’s energy effectively into direct heat where it matters most. The open flame provides immediate and comfortable radiant warmth from the moment it is lit, with no delay.
As the fireplaces are flueless, the heat remains in the room rather than being lost through a chimney. The energy is therefore utilised efficiently and contributes directly to the comfort of the space. For most homes, a Vauni fireplace provides sufficient warmth for atmospheric use and for enhancing room comfort, particularly during shorter periods of use or as a complement to existing heating.
Fuel consumption is typically around 0.3 litres of bioethanol per hour during normal use, and up to approximately 0.5 litres per hour at maximum output, depending on the model and settings.
Operating costs vary depending on current fuel prices and packaging size, but typically fall within the following ranges: approximately SEK 19–21 per hour, EUR 1.73–2.43 per hour, or GBP 1.50–2.12 per hour.
All combustion processes may produce some odour. When using high-quality bioethanol, any odour impact is typically low and is most noticeable during extinguishing, which is related to the denaturing of the fuel.
Vauni fireplaces and recommended fuels are designed to provide a smooth and controlled combustion, resulting in low odour impact when used correctly.
Safety & security
Vauni fireplaces are developed with the European standard EN 16647 as a minimum requirement and comply with the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988.
For safe operation, it is important to follow the instructions. Never refill fuel while the burner is hot, maintain the recommended safety distances from surrounding materials, and ensure adequate ventilation in the room. Always read the manual before first use.
For safe use, the home should be equipped with a smoke alarm. It is also recommended to have a 6 kg ABC powder fire extinguisher readily available, as well as a fire blanket.
Denatured ethanol (Class I flammable liquid) must be handled and stored in accordance with applicable national regulations. Always read the manual carefully before first use and follow all safety instructions provided.
Local regulations and requirements may vary depending on country and region, so we recommend checking which rules apply in your specific location.
Warranty & service
Vauni fireplaces are sold with a 5-year warranty. For products from Planika Fires (in markets where these products are offered by Vauni), a 2-year warranty applies, with the exception of the FLA4 model, which is covered by a 5-year warranty. A Vauni fireplace is more than a traditional fireplace. It is a carefully developed interior product, designed for regular use with a strong focus on form, function, and safe operation. Our fireplaces are produced in small batches with a high degree of manual quality control, which places significant demands on material selection and manufacturing processes.
The flue-free technology requires precision in both construction and burner design in order to function reliably. The result is a fireplace with a controlled flame, direct heat output, and simple installation without structural modifications to the building.
The price reflects development work, materials, small-batch production, as well as the support and quality assurance that accompany the product. For many, this means a higher initial purchase price, but also a considered, long-term solution that is easy to use and live with over time.
Vauni has its origins in academic research, where both technology and design were developed as part of a project at Chalmers University of Technology. The work focused on combustion technology, safety, and functionality—principles that continue to influence how our fireplaces are designed today.
The development process combines engineering expertise with design, where construction, material selection, and burner technology work together to provide a stable and controlled flame when used according to the instructions. The result is fireplaces that are carefully considered both technically and aesthetically, with an emphasis on safe operation, reliable performance, and an even heat experience.
For many customers, choosing Vauni comes down to this combination of technology, design, and a clearly defined development heritage.
